MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) has cautioned the public that only four hospitals are accredited to do stem cell procedures in the country.

In an advisory, the DOH has identified these health facilities as the Institute of Personalized Medicine, Asian Stem Cell Institute, Makati Medical Center-Cellular Therapeutics Center, and Lung Center of the Philippines-Molecular Diagnostics and Cellular Therapeutics Laboratory.

DOH-Health Facilities and Services Regulatory Bureau (HFSRB) Director Nicolas Lutero III said the four health facilities have met the requirements providing stem cell treatments.

“The public is hereby advised that only the following institutions are accredited by the DOH to do stem cell therapy,” he said.

The advisory shows that only three stem-cell treatments are allowed to be performed in the Philippines. These are hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, corneal resurfacing with limbal stem cells, and skin regeneration with epidermal stem cells.

“Please be informed the DOH of any person/s or institution/s administering stem cells without accreditation or using stem cells for other indications not yet approved by the FDA,” Lutero said.

THREE hospitals in metro manila have secured the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to engage in human stem cell and cell-based therapies after meeting the safety, efficacy and quality standards set by Department of Health (DOH)

In a joint advisory signed by Health Secretary Janette Garin, the FDA said the first health facilities to receive such accreditation were The Medical City, Asian Stem Cell Institute and Makati Medical Center.

The hospitals were given approval to perform three applications of Stem cell therapy: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, corneal resurfacing with limbal stem cells and skin regeneration with epidermal stem cells.
